In many instances, the prospect of wireless home automation security installation can be a bit overwhelming. Truth be told, however, a wireless home security installation isn’t all that complex. You essentially have three different components that you’re going to need to install in a basic wireless home security system. Once you have a handle on how to install those components, the rest of the process is an easy thing.

Home security systems offer you a level of protection and peace of mind you can’t get elsewhere. Unfortunately, in some cases, that peace of mind may be a false feeling. Like anything else, a home security system is made up of components that can fail. If you want to truly know you’re safe, there are some basic maintenance tasks you need to do on your home security system, including:

Just a little bit of maintenance can help make sure your home security system is protecting you like it should. A motion detector in your hallway or living room is one of the major components of your wireless home security system. You’ll want to mount the motion detector on a flat surface, usually a wall. The sensor should point down the hallway or into the living room. Most motion detectors for inside the house should be installed at between about 6 ½ and 7 ½ feet from the floor. (Of course, check the documentation on your system to see what the manufacturer recommends.)

Installation of a motion detector is usually done with a mounting bracket. You simply use a template to punch the necessary holes, and mount the motion detector using the provided screws or anchors. In some cases, these devices are light enough that they can even attach to the wall with adhesive. Most home break-ins occur through a door. Most door sensors will be magnet-based. You’ll use your door sensors as the most important part of your wireless home security system, and installation needs to be precise.

The final components of a wireless home security installation are the window sensors. These install in much the same way as door sensors. The sensor will attach to the part of the window that moves, and the magnet will attach to the window frame.

Here are some more quick additional tips when it comes to improving your home security situation.

Install deadbolt locks, as they deter crime. They make your home harder to get into and your door more secure. Just be sure you remember to lock your deadbolt when you’re gone and at night. (Don’t forget to lock your windows, too.)

Put up a motion detection light, as they are relatively cheap. Put one above your front door, or on the corner of your garage. Bright motion-detection lights will very often scare off an opportunistic burglar.

Pay attention to landscaping, don’t let your hedges grow too tall, especially those under your windows or nearby doors. Don’t give home invaders a nice place to hide.

Make sure all of your doors and windows can be seen from the street.

Have a dog, or pretend to have one, keep a big dog dish and an over-sized collar on your porch. Many would-be burglars will pass by a home if they believe it has a guard dog.

Put your lights on a timer, have them go on and off throughout the day when you’re not home (and at night when you’re on vacation or out for the evening). As with deadbolts, you need to actually turn these on in order for them to act as a deterrent, of course.

Finally, when you install your wireless security alarm system, make sure that you make a note of all of the locations, and put a reminder on your calendar to replace those home alarm batteries per the manufacturer’s recommendations.
